Welcome to Appalachian Genealogy

I am Misty Hamilton Smith. I have spent decades as a professional genealogist uncovering the hidden stories of the mountains. My work brings professional experience to the deep history of the people who built these hollows and ridges. We follow the entire 1,500 mile spine of Appalachia from the coal fields of Pennsylvania to the red clay of Georgia.

My Journey

My fascination with genealogy began with the stories of my own family. Over my career, I have worked with countless researchers to piece together their ancestral puzzles. I have developed a deep understanding of the cultural and legal nuances that shaped the lives of our mountain kin. My goal involves helping you move past the standard records to find the real people who lived behind the names on your tree.

The Blog

You will find a space here where I share the insights and strategies gathered throughout my time in the field. I have organized the work into three main areas to help you navigate this complex history:

The Research Vault (Methods & Records) This section offers a technical masterclass in professional grade genealogy. You will find strategies for analyzing complex legal records like land grants, merchant ledgers, and chancery court cases. We use these tools to solve the mysteries of missing documents and bridge the gaps left by courthouse losses.

Appalachian Life & Lore (Culture & Context) We explore the lived reality of our ancestors through mountain traditions and the historical events that tested their survival. These stories provide the essential cultural context needed to understand your family tree. We look at everything from ancestral healing practices to the folklore that defined mountain life.

Migration & Settlement (The Full Spine) We track the movement of families across the 1,500 mile Appalachian spine. This research connects regional records and settlement patterns to reveal the kinship networks that define our heritage from Pennsylvania to Georgia.
